To support growing international demand, Quality Assurance Engineer Ding Hong invited an accredited certification specialist to Changzhou Energy Equipment Co., Ltd. (CEEF) on May 31. Mechanical engineers and international sales personnel attended the seminar to review European Union CE marking requirements for heavy industrial heating equipment.
The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) in European Markets
The CE mark is a mandatory regulatory requirement for industrial equipment entering the European Economic Area. Every exported product must satisfy the safety and engineering baselines defined under EU New Approach Directives.
For a manufacturer of pressure vessels and thermal fluid heaters, the primary regulation is the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). This directive governs the design, fabrication, and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies operating at a maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar gauge.
Category IV and Module G Unit Verification
During the session, the certification engineer detailed how to determine hazard categories for high temperature heat transfer systems. Based on operating pressure, internal volume, and heat transfer fluid properties, CEEF’s core thermal oil heater systems fall under PED Category IV, Module G (EC Unit Verification).
Module G is the most stringent conformity assessment pathway under the directive. Certifying an individual thermal oil furnace or hot oil boiler under Module G requires third party verification across every stage of production:
- Design examination and engineering calculation review
- Technical documentation and drawing audits
- Material assessment and mill certificate verification
- Welding procedure qualification records
- Welder and nondestructive testing (NDT) operator certifications
- Shop floor fabrication surveillance and witnessed final pressure testing
Executing PED Category IV requirements places strict demands on both R&D calculations and shop floor metallurgy. By aligning production with European PED standards alongside existing ASME authorizations, CEEF continues to supply code compliant thermal fluid heaters for global chemical, petrochemical, and renewable energy plants.
